According to the WSSC, the break occurred in a 12-inch pipe running along MacArthur Boulevard in Cabin John/Glen Echo area. When a water break occurs, the system loses pressure which causes an increased risk of contamination.  The pipe has since been repaired, according to the Washington Post, but officials need to test samples from the impacted areas to determine when the water is safe for consumption again, which could take a few days. Once it’s cleared, WSSC will alert residents online, via their website, Twitter, and Facebook.

Residents can check the commission’s map to see the affected areas.

Those under the advisory should boil water and cool it before using it to cook, drink, brush teeth, or make ice. They should also discard any drinks or ice made with old water. It’s still safe to shower or bathe so long as water is not consumed.
