Five Orange Line stations in D.C. and Prince George’s County are back open again after a summer-long shutdown that rehabilitated the aging platform edges and added new amenities. And Metro has announced its new rail schedule in preparation for the upcoming partial shutdown of the Blue Line in Virginia and the total shutdown of the Yellow Line.
New Carrollton, Landover, Cheverly, Deanwood, and Minnesota Ave. riders had been using shuttle services to get around during the shutdown. But on Tuesday morning, riders returned to new non-slip tiles, new digital passenger information screens, LED lighting, improved security cameras, better speakers for announcements, and new platform shelters with power outlets.

The completion of the $436 million Orange Line project marks the end of a big, three-year-long project to rehabilitate 20 of the outdoor stations.
Last summer, Metro worked on Greenbelt, College Park-U of Md, Prince George’s Plaza, and West Hyattsville. In Spring 2021, Addison Road and Arlington Cemetery were completed. Fall 2020 included repairs at the Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport. Summer 2020 had work at Vienna, Dunn Loring, West Falls Church, and East Falls Church. The whole thing kicked off in 2019 at Braddock Road, King St.-Old Town, Eisenhower Ave., Huntington, Van Dorn St., and Franconia-Springfield.

Meanwhile, Metro says service on the Green Line will double to trains every 8 minutes starting Sept. 12 to compensate for partial Yellow Line shutdown during work to integrate the new Potomac Yard station into the system. Weekend service will also improve from 20 minutes to 15 minutes on the Orange, Blue, and Silver lines.
The new schedule also includes a dozen more 7000-series trains on the Green Line and — for the first time — the Red Line, but instead of adding more service, they will replace older trains. So while the 20 newer trains now back on the tracks improve capacity (all are eight cars vs. the older six-car trains) they don’t drastically improve service times. The Blue Line will also go toward New Carrollton as well as its usual Largo terminus.

Metro is closing stations south of National Airport for six weeks. Then, Yellow Line bridge work starts after Oct. 22, and continues into May 2023.
“As we invest in infrastructure, open new stations, and maintain our existing system, we move towards safer, more reliable service,” Randy Clarke, Metro’s GM said in a statement.
Stations served by more than one line will provide customers with even more frequent service times:
- Blue, Orange, or Silver line trains arrive every four minutes between Rosslyn and Stadium-Armory
- Blue line trains arrive every eight minutes between National Airport and Stadium-Armory
- Orange or Silver line trains arrive every eight minutes between East Falls Church and Rosslyn
- Blue and Silver line trains arrive every 12 minutes or less between Stadium-Armory and Largo
