A former Prince William County official tasked with overseeing election procedures was indicted by a grand jury on corruption charges, Virginia Attorney General Jason Miyares announced Wednesday.

Michele White, a former county general registrar, faces two felony charges and one misdemeanor charge, for corrupt conduct as an election official, false statements by an election official, and willful neglect of duty as an election official. According to a press release from Miyares’ office, the charges are tied to a four-month period between August and December 2020.

A spokesperson for Miyares’ office declined to comment further on the grand jury. Eric Olsen, the county’s current general registrar, told DCist/WAMU in an email on Wednesday that the office built a new leadership team in 2022, and it was only after this restructuring and rebuilding did the office flag “discrepancies” to the commissioner of election and state board of elections, prompting the investigation.

White, who was praised by elected officials for her leadership and success through the county’s 2020 election process, resigned from her post just weeks ahead of the start of early voting for the June 2021 primary. According to the Prince William Times, White resigned after an emergency meeting with the county’s election board, which was called to “discuss White’s tenure at the office of elections.”

At the time, the only members were of the electoral board were Democrat Keith Scarborough, an attorney for an advertising trade association in D.C., and chairperson Robin Williams. Williams told the Prince William Times that White’s departure had nothing to do with the handling of recent elections or the processing of ballots or votes.

In an email to DCist/WAMU on Wednesday, Olsen said the same thing: “[White’s] conduct did not impact the outcome of any election contest.”

The Office of Elections declined to comment further on pending litigation. Early voting for the November election starts on Sept. 23, 2022.
