Sometimes the best way to celebrate is by riding public transit.

Transit-riding soccer fans, rejoice!

Metro’s latest, limited-edition SmartTrip cards celebrate the reigning National Women’s Soccer League champions, the Washington Spirit. The cards show the jubilant team holding the trophy overhead after beating the Chicago Red Stars.

Metro has minted 10,000 of the cards, and they are only available at a few stations, not online. They can be found at Navy Yard, Waterfront, and Gallery Place stations, and cost $2, just like any other SmarTrip card, plus fare.

On Tuesday, Sept. 13, Spirit fans (and Metro fans) can show off their new transit cards to starting midfielder Anna Heilferty and Metro General Manager Randy Clarke at the Gallery Place Station, where the two are holding a “meet and greet” at 4p.m.

“We are excited to honor the Spirit, reigning NWSL champs, with this commemorative card,” said Clarke in a press release. “Metro is proud to support the team and fans getting to and from games.”

The Spirit won their first championship last November after a tumultuous season. Metro and the team designed the cards to be released at the start of this NWSL season, but the release was delayed due to pandemic supply chain issues, according to the transit agency.

Metro has commemorated past champions with other SmarTrip cards (you’re collecting them all, aren’t you??) These include the Capitals, the 2018 Stanley Cup winners, the Nationals, who won the World Series in 2019, and the Mystics, who took the 2019 Women’s National Basketball Association title.

The practice of making commemorative SmarTrip cards for championship wins started with a challenge over social media.

“Congrats on an amazing win!” the transit agency wrote on Twitter after Game 4 of the Stanley Cup finals in 2018. “Bring home the #StanleyCup and we’re gonna make a commemorative smartrip card in your honor!”

Metro made good on the promise, and now, in a city on a bit of a winning streak, can’t stop printing new cards.
