These are just a sampling of the questions that will be at the center of DC Design Week, which kicks off with a talk by illustrator Justine Swindell. DOUBLE EXPOSURE: Sometimes, you go to the movies to escape the world around you. This weekend, you might instead go to understand it better. Double Exposure Film Festival is back to showcase investigative documentaries virtually and at various locations in D.C. LIBRARY OF CONCERTS: Somewhere between samba and yé-yé lies Banda Magda, the project of Greek musician Magda Giannikou. The band kicks off the Library of Congress’ fall concert series, which takes place all season long at their Coolidge Auditorium. (Library of Congress; 8 p.m.; FREE)
STOP TIME: To avoid deportation, Guatemalan immigrant Lucio Perez spent three years living in the basement of an Amherst, Massachusetts church. His story is the subject of Stop Time, a documentary screening this weekend at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Arlington as part of the 2022 Immigration Film Festival. FITZGERALD LITERARY FEST: Are you just an F. Scott Fitzgerald fan? Or are you hoping to be the next Fitzgerald? Either way, the F. Scott Fitzgerald Literary Festival is for you. There will be writing workshops, talks, and a screening of The Last Time I Saw Paris, which is loosely based on a Fitzgerald story. Don’t miss the tour of the author’s old Rockville haunts. FREDERICK DOUGLASS FAMILY DAY: Got kids who’ve been learning about Frederick Douglass? This weekend at Anacostia Park, they can round out their lessons by meeting him — well, kind of. A Douglass reenactor is the highlight of Frederick Douglass Family Day, which also includes lawn games, bike rides, live music and storytelling. (Anacostia Park; 11 a.m. 4 p.m.; FREE)
SHAW ARTS WALK: Touring a gallery, catching some live music or shopping at an artisan market would each make for a pretty great Saturday in this writer’s book. Shaw Arts Walk has got all three. FILIPINO AMERICAN ORGANIZING: It’s Filipino American History Month, and you can celebrate with Jon Melegrito, a Filipino activist. MISTAKES WERE MADE: Writing happily ever after stories for young queer women and people is Meryl Wilsner’s specialty. They’ll be discussing their latest love story, Mistakes Were Made, with Susie Dumond, author of Queerly Beloved, at East City Bookshop. This weekend, the Foxhall Road museum is hosting an open house, which features a full slate of activities and a lineup of food trucks. OPALINE MARKET: If visiting the farmers’ market is on your weekend to-do list, consider swapping out your go-to for the pop-up Opaline Farmers Market. For the third year, the creative collective hosts a market that raises money for a good cause. This year, that cause is teachers at River Terrace Education Campus. DC RECORD FAIR: Vinyl-heads unite: This Sunday, the DC Record Fair is taking over Eaton DC. Over 40 vendors will be at the hotel, selling an eclectic mix of records.
