It hasn’t even reached peak fall foliage for much of the region yet, and we are already thinking about winter. A wintertime staple returns next month: The National Gallery of Art Sculpture Garden Ice Rink!

Weather permitting, the ice rink that’s located between 7th and 9th Streets along Constitution Avenue NW begins  welcoming visitors on Saturday, Nov. 26. The rink will be open 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, and for an extra two hours on Friday and Saturday. Visitors, who once included four members of the Washington Capitals, can hit the ice until March 5.

There’s a price for admission: $12, plus $6 for skate rentals and $1 for first-come, first served lockers. But adults over 60, children under 12, military service members, and students with a valid school ID can get in for a discounted price of $9.

Anyone interested in a season pass? That costs $225. How about skating lessons? A 30-minute group lesson goes for $40 (plus a hot chocolate from the Pavilion Café).

Expect the ice rink to close when it rains or during extreme temperatures. The National Gallery and Sculpture Garden are also closed Dec. 25 to Jan. 1. For more information, check out the National Gallery of Art website.

Maybe visit the National Gallery of Art before or afterwards. The East Building reopened this summer after a major renovation project that has made the space brighter and more accessible.
