D.C.’s Edgewood neighborhood is about to be home to a huge indoor pickleball complex and the city’s only indoor roller rink.

Kraken Kourts, which will open in January on Bryant Street NE, comes from Hook Hall co-founder and Kraken Axes owner Anna Valero and landlord MRP Realty. The massive 70,000-square foot complex is a part of MRP Bryant Street development, which also houses Alamo Drafthouse, metrobar, and F45 Training.

Kraken Kourts will include a tavern, though it won’t make its own food. Food will come from rotating local food vendors popping up at the venue. The space does not have a kitchen, but Valero says that just provides an opportunity to elevate local businesses. Eventually, there’s supposed to be a food hall opening nearby that her customers can patronize, she adds.

The tavern will feature indoor lawn games like cornhole, giant Jenga, and shuffleboard –  in addition to the pickleball courts. The goal is to make Kraken Kourts a community space that appeals to people of all ages.

“What is amazing about pickleball and roller skating is that both sports have this mass appeal — no matter how old or athletic you are, both are activities that everyone can enjoy,” Valero said in a press release.

Food and drinks will come from a rotating roster of local vendors.

Pickleball has become popular in D.C. with leagues and courts across the District. Valero says there’s a huge demand for court time in the region, including at the nearby Edgewood Recreation Center, the Washington Business Journal reported Monday.

“It is just limiting, trying to get access even to outdoor courts,” Valero says, noting how hot summers and cold winters can be a barrier to outdoor courts. “And so what we are really looking to do is really bring it as an amenity to D.C.”

Kraken Kourts will launch pickleball leagues in late January along with clinics and private lessons. The roller rink won’t be Valero’s first foray into roller skating. Hook Hall has held pop-up roller skating events in the past. Right now, the only designated roller skating spot in the District is the outdoor skating pavilion in Anacostia Park.

“There is a very robust skating community here in D.C. And so I’m super excited to create an indoor home for them as well,” Valero says.
