Metro’s Potomac Yard station in Alexandria will open in May, the transit agency announced Tuesday.

The station was set to open in April 2022 but two delays, including integrating the signaling system and problems with the dirt underneath the tracks, pushed back the opening.

Now Metro says it is 90% complete with the project and has a roadmap to May that includes finishing the station, completing fire marshal checks, running simulated service, getting concurrence from Metro’s safety oversight body, and then opening the station for service.Potomac Yard Checklist Graphic-new

“We are excited to have an opening in sight for Potomac Yard Station,” Metro General Manager Randy Clarke said in a statement. “Our team, the City of Alexandria, and contractors are working hard to complete the station and we look forward to providing new transit service to this rapidly developing area.”

The $370 million station on the Blue and Yellow lines sits between the National Airport stop and the Braddock Road stop. The City of Alexandria first started looking at the idea of a new station there in the 1990s and voted to study a plan for building it in earnest in the late 2000s. The project is “funded by tax revenues and developer contributions generated by planned new development in the Potomac Yard neighborhood, as well as state grants, loans, and regional sources,” Metro says.

The area around the station, meanwhile, is developing rapidly. The Potomac Yard and greater National Landing area are set to become a key economic and educational center in the coming years as Virginia Tech opens a campus near the station and Amazon moves in up the road. Other mixed-use apartments, office, and shopping developments are also underway.

The station is expected to generate billions in investment nearby, and support 26,000 new jobs, and 13,000 new residents in the area. The station could attract 12,000 riders a day, according to studies done before construction.

“While delayed longer than expected, it is exciting to start the countdown to opening Potomac Yard Station for our customers,” Metro Board Chair Paul Smedberg said in a statement. “By adding this infill station to the Blue and Yellow lines, we are anchoring Potomac Yard as a hub for employment, education, housing, and recreation.”

Potomac Yard will be Metro’s 98th station overall and its second infill station after NoMa-Gallaudet. No other new stations are in the works at the moment.

The tracks through the station opened on Nov. 6. We got a sneak peek at the station back then:

May is shaping up to be a big month for Metro. The Yellow Line is set to reopen after extensive bridge and tunnel repairs that closed the line for almost nine months. Metro also wants to return to regular service levels that month, after months without most of its 7000-series fleet.
