Prepare for parking restrictions and road closures in D.C. this weekend for various events, including a swearing-in ceremony for D.C.’s newly elected Attorney General, members of the D.C. Council, and Mayor Muriel Bowser, who is now the second person — and first woman — to be elected to three consecutive terms.

The swearing-in ceremony Monday is one of several new year events the District government is hosting, including a New Year’s Eve and Inaugural Ball on Saturday, the FitDC Fresh Start 5K run Sunday, and an interfaith service for the inauguration on Monday.

The 5K race starts at 10 a.m. Sunday at Freedom Plaza and will result in the following road closures.

The swearing-in event will be held Monday from 9:30 a.m. to noon at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center. Ahead of the ceremony, the Metropolitan Police Department will close streets and restrict parking around the convention center.

The streets that will be off limits to parking from 5 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday are:

  • East curb lane of Ninth Street from M Street to Mount Vernon Place NW
  • West curb lane of Seventh Street from M Street to Mount Vernon Place NW
  • L Street from Seventh Street to Ninth Street NW
  • North curb lane of K Street from Ninth Street to 10th Street NW
  • North curb lane of K Street from Sixth Street to Seventh Street NW

There will also be a road closure on L Street NW between Seventh and Ninth streets from 6:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Vehicles found parked in the no-parking zones during the designated hours will be ticketed and towed, MPD said. The agency is also advising that motorists could experience delays if traveling near the convention center and urging drivers to consider alternative routes. MPD is also urging motorists to operate with caution due to increased pedestrian traffic for the day’s ceremony.

This short one-day restriction comes on the heels of a massive closure of streets and access around the convention center in mid-December due to the U.S.-Africa Leaders Summit. Business owners around the meeting facility told Axios that foot traffic significantly decreased, while some restaurants stopped taking DoorDash and UberEats orders altogether.
