Update: MARC train service is now running with reduced capacity. The communications issue is resolved, but the MARC team is still working on restoring full service for the trains.

All MARC train service was canceled early Friday morning between Baltimore and Washington due to a “system wide outage,” according to the Maryland  Transit Administration. The suspension of service began around 6 a.m.

The MTA said technicians were working to restore service of the trains between Baltimore and Washington, but more than two hours into the outage, no estimate for when service would restart had been provided. According to the American Public Transportation Association, nearly 9,000 people used the MARC system daily in the second quarter of last year.

MTA Director Holly Arnold said commuter buses would be honoring MARC ticket holders, and encouraged riders to use WMATA options as well. The outage comes on the morning of the annual March for Life in D.C., which organizers expect to draw 50,000 people, according to a National Park Service permit.
