One of the oldest White House springtime traditions is right around the corner: Registration for the White House Easter Egg Roll opens Thursday, March 16 at 10 a.m., President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden announced Monday.

The 145-year-old tradition is one of the most hotly anticipated public events at the “People’s House,” and takes place on Easter Monday, which this year falls on April 10.

The online lottery is free of charge and will remain open until March 23 at 3 p.m. Randomly selected participants will be notified by email that they can attend on or after March 27, according to a White House release.

The egg roll, geared toward children age 12 and under, is the White House’s largest annual event, drawing as many as 35,000 guests and celebrities like Beyoncé, Ariana Grande, Shaquille O’Neal, and — during the Trump years — Elmo  (who took the opportunity to subtly promote public media after the president proposed cutting national funding for it).

The South Lawn spectacle took a hiatus for two years before widespread availability of the COVID vaccine, but returned with more than 30,000 guests in 2022.

This year’s celebrity guest list has yet to be announced, but the First Family invited Jimmy Fallon last year, and he read his children’s book Nana Loves You More to the kids in attendance. (Fallon shared how much he loves visiting D.C. in a Tonight Show episode that followed last year’s event.)

Even the egg roll can’t escape the complexities of Washington politics. U.S. farmers typically donate thousands of chicken eggs to be decorated, rolled, and eaten at the event — much to the disapproval of animal rights groups like PETA. The group’s president wrote to President Joe Biden requesting the use of recyclable plastic or wooden eggs at the event, per The Hill.

Another free and family-friendly White House event is coming this spring: The spring garden tour weekend. The White House will open the gardens and South Grounds for tours on April 1- 2 between 10 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. The National Park Service will distribute a limited number of timed tickets from the White House Visitor Center (1450 Pennsylvania Ave NW), starting at 8:30 a.m. each tour day.
