D.C.’s Deputy Mayor John Falcicchio has left the administration, but it remains unclear why or when it happened.
Mayor Muriel Bowser’s office released a press release this afternoon that noted two new appointments within her staff.
One was the elevation of Lindsey Parker to Bowser’s Chief of Staff. The other was the appointment of the former Department of General Services head Keith Anderson to the position of Interim Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development (DMPED).
That’s because the person who previously occupied both positions, John Falcicchio, is apparently no longer part of the administration.
“We also thank Deputy Mayor John Falcicchio for his years of service to the District as he transitions to the private sector,” reads the press release’s final line.
Falcicchio has long been a public face of the administration, often posting on social media visiting local businesses, attending events, and touting the administration’s accomplishments all in the name of the mayor.
DCist/WAMU has reached out to various members of the administration for more information but has yet to receive any further details about Falcicchio’s departure.
“Nothing to add besides what was in the press release,” Bowser spokesperson Susana Castillo told DCist/WAMU.
The newsroom has also called and texted Falcicchio directly but has not yet received a response to those inquiries.
Falcicchio was absent from yesterday’s DMPED press conference, where it was announced a Marvel movie was being shot in D.C. this summer, as NBC4’s Mark Segraves pointed out on social media.
He was first named Deputy Mayor in January 2020. Falcicchio had been Bowser’s chief of staff since she was first elected in 2014. Prior to that, he was a long-time aide to former Mayor Adrian Fenty.
This staff change also comes one day before the Cherry Blossom Festival is set to start and perhaps only days before peak bloom. The festival and the trees’ vibrant pink petals are the city’s marquee event of the year and can bring an estimated 1.5 million people to the District.
This story has been updated to reflect that it remains unclear as to why Falcicchio has left the administration.
