Unfortunately for those who consider IKEA a destination and an experience, the new format means you probably won’t be able to wander for hours or eat Swedish meatballs there.

The company announced today the new store will be located in a 5,000 square foot retail space in Pentagon Centre, near the Costco. This IKEA will be accessible through the Metro’s Yellow and Blue lines or buses (Good luck getting that Billy bookcase through the faregate, though.)

Fans expecting a typical IKEA may be disappointed, however. According to a company press release, the new location will be a “Plan & order point”, which means this smaller-format store will only offer items for delivery. However, there will still be some room displays to “provide inspiration to customers,” according to an IKEA U.S. spokesperson. Customers will be able to meet with IKEA specialists for interior design planning and to get help with larger projects like kitchen and bathroom remodels.

“We’re excited to welcome customers living in the DC Metro area or the DMV to a new IKEA location this summer, with more to come in the future. The Plan & order point concept has been created with the unique needs of local consumers in mind, from the proximity to public transportation and delivery and assembly options, to the opportunity for affordable design services,” said Raquel Ely, market manager for IKEA U.S.

Unfortunately for those who consider IKEA a destination and an experience, the new format means you probably won’t be able to wander for hours or fill a shopping cart with random kitchen items from the Marketplace. And for lovers of Swedish meatballs and lingonberry sauce, it also means there won’t be a cafeteria at the Arlington location. Trust us, we asked IKEA.

“You are correct – there will not be an IKEA food offering at the IKEA Arlington Plan & order point. This new location will complement our already existing larger format stores in Woodbridge, VA and College Park, MD where customers are able to enjoy our meatballs and other IKEA Food offerings from the Bistro, Restaurant and Swedish Food Market,” the spokesperson told DCist/WAMU.

The new store is slated to open later this summer.
