Original: Fairfax County police have been in a standoff for more than 24 hours with an armed woman that has closed off a busy section of Richmond Highway.
The standoff began at around 11 a.m. on Tuesday when the woman, who police say has a handgun, barricaded herself inside a car. The Fairfax County Police Department says the woman is experiencing a mental health crisis. The department’s Crisis Negotiations Team is talking to the woman, and police say the goal is to resolve the situation peacefully. Police report that the woman appears to be alone in the car.
We are still on scene of the barricade in the 7400 blk of Richmond Hwy. A woman remains in a vehicle armed with a handgun.
Richmond Hwy remains closed between Lockheed Blvd and Boswell Ave. This closure will impact rush hour traffic. Please avoid the area.

As NBC4 Washington reports, the situation may be connected with the case of two Maryland women who went missing. According to NBC4, police encountered a “distraught woman” outside a Quality Inn Motel after being asked to perform a welfare check in the area Tuesday morning. The woman said she had been abducted, and she told police the suspect’s vehicle had just fled. Police found the vehicle, leading to the standoff with the armed woman.
The standoff is affecting rush hour traffic. Drivers are urged to avoid the highway between Lockheed Boulevard and Boswell Avenue.
