If you’ve ever wanted to go on a rotating series of blind dates in front of millions of people, Netflix has an appealing proposition for you.
Casting directors are still scouring the D.C. area for folks who might want to star in a future season of Love is Blind. The show just released its fourth season based in Seattle but is continuing to cast for the future, with its fifth season predicted for a fall 2023 release.
And while you can still apply online, it appears casting professionals might also come to you: Local gyms and bars have been asked to scout for the show, two businesses tell DCist/WAMU. And locals have reported direct reach-outs on social media – all social media. One person told local account Overheard DC that their boyfriend received a direct message via LinkedIn (it appears these casting directors really know their audience).
For the uninitiated among you: Love is Blind is a dating experiment that professes to test whether love can bloom (and last) between two people who begin their connection without ever seeing one another. Each season the show focuses on 15 singles where the potential lovers communicate in “pods” — without seeing their potential partner. If all goes well, these “blind dates” could lead to a blind proposal — after which couples see the love of their lives for the first time. After the fact, they date in the real world for a few weeks before their wedding.
The show is wildly popular, and also just wild. It casts lots of conventionally attractive people and features your typical reality TV show fodder: love triangles, horrible fights, lots of tears, and dramatic speeches from the altar. It’s also faced backlash for a lack of body diversity and a low success rate — only four couples are still together.
But that hasn’t stopped casting associates from shooting their shot. VIDA Fitness confirmed that someone contacted one of their team members and asked them to spread the word. (“I wanted to reach out and share this exciting news in the event that you or anyone you know would be interested in applying for the show!” the casting associate wrote in an email shared with DCist/WAMU).
Brent Kroll, owner of Pop Fizz, says that last week, producers reached out and asked him to post flyers advertising the casting call. They also asked him to pass along the Instagram handles and phone numbers of patrons who may be interested in the show.
But Kroll stresses that he himself isn’t screening applicants.
“People are reaching out, and they’re like, ‘Oh, can you get me on the show?’ or ‘Oh, do I pass your test?’” Kroll says. “And I’m just like, ‘No, we’re just facilitating getting them information, and they just reached out to us as a bar and as a company because we’re a good bar for dates and singles.”
Kroll says they’re open to hosting dates for the show when it starts production. He’s a fan of the show himself, along with his fiance and the rest of the Pop Fizz staff. But for now, his team is promoting the casting call on their own social accounts – and they’ve already received a ton of direct messages.
This wouldn’t be the first time the popular reality show has gotten our hopes up. A casting call for D.C. was circulated back in September of 2022. It’s unclear how far that casting endeavor went, or whether anyone has already been selected for the show. It’s also unclear which season D.C. may be slated for. But last week, Kinetic Content, Love is Blind’s production company, posted more casting calls for Washington, D.C., Denver, Minneapolis, and St. Paul on Instagram.
The casting application has a whopping 78 questions, some of which dive deep, like:
- What is something you would be hesitant to share in the pods?
- What does your perfect match look like physically?
- Why are you a catch?
And if you make it past the application, there are multiple interview phases before getting to the show with more information on the process detailed on Kinetic Content’s Instagram page. We reached out to the head of casting at Kinetic Content to learn more but are still waiting for an interview. So, for now, you may just have to go in…blind!
Keep an eye out in your DMs, at your local businesses, or just apply here. Godspeed.
