EMANCIPATION DAY: Celebrate DC Emancipation Day in one of two ways: enjoy a musical and visual celebration from D.C. PANDEMIC PERFORMANCE: Join an evening of poetry, monologues, and performances, both in-person and via livestream, to mark the third year of the COVID-19 pandemic. Students from Prince George’s Community College Center for the Performing Arts, artists, and playwrights will make an assessment of the “new normal” in the U.S. in 2023. STUDENT DEMOS: The annual #HouseofCode challenge for students to create apps hosts a winning app challengers session for the public to attend. See demos from the winning teams, who coded and created the apps themselves. (Capitol Visitors Center; 4 p.m.; FREE)
ANNIVERSARY PARTY: The Inner Loop, a literary reading series and network for creative writers in D.C., celebrates its ninth anniversary. SPRING BREAK: Calling all parents: if your child is on spring break and you’re in town, the Friends of Anacostia Park have a whole week of programming to keep your kid occupied and having fun. EARTH DAY BEER: Sip on some free beer while hearing from experts on urban and rural agriculture and how they’re being affected by climate change. In honor of Earth Day, Defend Our Future joins forces with the Environmental Defense Fund and Sen. John Hickenlooper to talk about urban green spaces and supporting local, sustainable businesses, such as Urban Garden Brewing, City-State Brewing, and Sankofa Brewing. DOUBLE FEATURE: PostClassical Ensemble was selected by the Spanish government to help celebrate the 100-year anniversary of the opera “Master Peter’s Puppet Show.” This performance is twofold: the double feature includes the seminal opera as well as the debut of a performance piece about the friendship between poet Federico García Lorca and Manuel de Falla.
