In the next five years or so, you could have a much easier walk from Crystal City to National Airport via a new pedestrian bridge.

The Arlington County Board over the weekend approved the location of the bridge and $4 million for engineering.

The bridge will begin at the Virginia Railway Express station at Crystal City, cross the train tracks and George Washington Parkway, and end up on the northern end of the airport. An exact location is yet to be determined, officials say they want to avoid or minimize impacts on parking and road projects.

The interactive map was created from plans found in county documents.

The bridge will also create another connection between Crystal City and the Mount Vernon Trail. While you technically can walk to the airport already, it’s a 20-30 minute indirect and confusing walk, some of it along busy and fast roads.

Officials looked at 16 different alignments, including bridges and tunnel options along several areas. A tunnel was deemed infeasible because of all of the infrastructure issues with the track and other things in the area.

An environmental assessment is set to begin this summer and construction is expected to wrap by 2028 at the earliest.

The pedestrian connection was pitched as part of an incentive package to attract Amazon’s HQ2. The county says the bridge project will support more choices for active transportation modes like walking and biking, and advance the goals of local and regional transportation plans.
