Various D.C. area establishments are closing and events are being postponed or even canceled because the air quality is hazardous for all residents. Major League Baseball announced the postponement of Thursday’s scheduled game between Washington Nationals and the Arizona Diamondbacks at Nationals Park just an hour before game time. The National Zoo also said it would close for the day.

Wildfires in eastern Canada are polluting the air, leading D.C.’s official alert level to hit Code Purple on the Air Quality Index meter. Everyone, not just those with respiratory illnesses, are encouraged to avoid strenuous outdoor activities and keep any outdoor activities short. If anyone has to be outside, experts are recommending they wear a high quality mask, like an N95.

Closure and cancellation decisions are being made in real time absent government guidance, specifically for businesses.

“We’re asking people to take heed,” said D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser during a morning press conference. “The basics of it is if you don’t have to be outside then don’t be outside. If you do need to be outside, then to wear a mask to limit your exposure.”

Shortly after her press conference, the Bowser administration announced that it’s suspending non-essential citywide services for at least the day, including paving and other road operations, as well as household trash and recycling collection. Trash and recycling collection will slide for a day for the remainder of the week through Saturday, meaning trash collection scheduled for Thursday will be collected Friday, June 9. The D.C. Department of Transportation has team members who are on call if any issues warrant immediate attention. D.C. Department of Parks and Recreation fields, playgrounds, and athletic courts are also closed. DC Public Schools already announced cancelling outdoor activities.

How long will this last? According to Capital Weather: “Air quality alerts are in effect through early Friday in large parts of this region. The smoke is expected to meaningfully subside as winds become more northwesterly into the weekend.”
