After a months-long emergency closure, the Wilson Aquatic Center in Tenleytown — one of D.C.’s largest public pools — reopened on Monday, June 12.

The D.C. Department of Parks and Recreation shared the news on Twitter Monday morning. The pool will be open Monday through Friday, 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The aquatic center closed earlier this year after a health inspection uncovered a litany of problems. For months, the city didn’t provide a clear reopening date for the city’s busiest indoor pool.

According to DPR, Wilson Aquatic Center is only “temporarily” reopening; the center will close again later this year for a full upgrade of its HVAC system. The city has selected a contractor for the project and expects the parts to arrive by fall, per the Department of General Services and DPR.

The pool initially closed back in February due to a multitude of issues: drainage problems, diving equipment being loose, and “improper temperatures” in sinks and showers, according to an inspection report. The facility had also failed to report an illness to DC Health, per the report (the report did not offer further detail about what type of illness).

In March, a DGS spokesperson told DCist/WAMU that the city had replaced a mixing valve for the hot water in the showers, repaired leaks in the filter room, and fixed the ADA-compliant accessible door openers at the front entrance. At the time, the spokesperson said the HVAC system was in the midst of repairs.

At a Monday press conference, DGS Director Delano Hunter  and interim DPR director Thennie Freeman said crews have added additional exhaust and ventilation measures at the pool, making the facility safe for the public until that more intensive overhaul of the HVAC system takes place.

Wilson Aquatic Center is one of the most popular indoor pool facilities in the city, housing a 50-by-25 meter Olympic-sized pool with diving boards, a whirlpool, and a viewing gallery, in addition to a kid-friendly pool. It first opened in 2009, after the old pool on that same site was demolished in 2007. In the 14 years since its opening, the pool has closed on several occasions; air conditioning issues, staffing shortages, and water pressure problems caused it to shut down temporarily multiple times in 2012 and 2013.
