The 2023 Women’s World Cup begins Thursday, with the first at 3 a.m. EST. Australia and New Zealand are hosting the month-long tournament, hence the drastic time difference for locals — but if you plan to be up and would like to watch the matches among like-minded company, you can.
That’s because the D.C. Council passed legislation last month that allows bars and restaurants to stay open 24 hours during the tournament, just as they did for the 2022 Men’s World Cup. Establishments can even serve alcohol too, except for a bit of a booze break between 4 a.m. and 6 a.m.
Nearly 100 local bars, restaurants, and venues have requested to stay open, paying the city the $100 registration fee.
It’s important to note, however, that just because a bar or restaurant operator requested to stay open 24/7, that doesn’t mean they will. Shaw bar Ivy and Coney, for example, will only show matches during its regular operating hours during the tournament’s first round, according to co-owner Chris Powers. But the bar might open in the off hours for the knockout rounds. The best thing to do is check with the bar or restaurant beforehand.
Toro Bar in Columbia Heights was the first bar to declare 24-hour service during the Women’s World Cup, sharing on Instagram that it’ll be open for all matches. Expect breakfast burritos for morning games or spicy chorizo hot dogs and brisket chili nachos for afternoon games.
As you are. on 8th Street SE will begin playing the games in the café area on Friday, when the U.S. plays Vietnam. Co-owner Jo McDaniel tells DCist/WAMU that they’ll be open extended hours, playing Zambia/Japan, England/Haiti, Sweden/South Africa, Netherlands/Portugal, and France/Jamaica, Italy/Argentina, and Germany/Morocco matches this weekend alone. “We are happy to take feedback on games people on this side of town want to watch,” says McDaniel.
Another bar that plans to be open in the middle of the night but only for USA matches: Boundary Stone in Bloomingdale. Expect the games to be on during regular and off hours (if USA is playing). “Early openings will have a small breakfast menu and happy hour beers for you to choose from. See you at the pub!” the bar tweeted.
Other bars that plan to show matches during regular operating hours include Midlands in Petworth, Atlas in Navy Yard (only when the Nationals are not playing), and WunderGarten.
The tournament kicks off during a soccer-tastic week in D.C., as the District hosts the MLS All-Star match at Audi Field. The event brings the All-Star Skills Challenge to Audi on Tuesday and the match with MLS All-Stars vs. FC Arsenal on Wednesday, with some bars around the stadium also offering specials.
Here’s a list of bars that requested to stay open 24/7 during the World Cup as of July 17, the city’s deadline, according to the Alcoholic Beverage and Cannabis Administration.
