PARK(ing) Day, the annual tradition that converts D.C.’s on-street parking spaces into pop-up parks, will host its 10th iteration this Friday, Sept. 15.

From 9 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., nine parklets will pop up across Wards 1, 2, 4, 6, and 8. You can see the participating locations on the map below.

Each year, community organizations and businesses apply to run a parklet, where throughout the day they creatively showcase alternative uses for a parking space — like hosting discussions, planting a garden, or simply setting up chairs to sit and hang out. For example, the Anacostia Parks & Community Collaborative will be taking over a segment of Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue in Southeast to set up a mini forest pop-up, with a focus on discussing green space equity. Other sponsors usually include Business Improvement Districts or Main Street organizations. In Shaw, the 9:30 Club is taking over a corner near the landmark music venue, while the Public Defender Service will be setting up at 1442 Pennsylvania Avenue Southeast.

The concept originated in San Francisco in 2005, and in the years since has expanded into cities across the U.S. — although the pandemic-era celebrations looked a bit different in 2020 and 2021. Arlington will also be participating this year but has not released an updated list of parklet locations.
