Not everyone is crowding into airports and clogging freeways this Thanksgiving. Some are putting on turkey-shaped hats and hitting the pavement for the 22nd annual Thanksgiving Trot for Hunger 5K in downtown D.C. The event benefits the non-profit So Others Might Eat (SOME).
The 5k begins around 9:15 a.m. at Freedom Plaza, while a shorter 1-mile kids’ run starts at 8:30 a.m. Same-day registration begins at 7 a.m. The Best Dressed Turkey competition starts at 10:30 a.m.
This year’s event will entail numerous road closures and parking restrictions downtown on Thanksgiving day, beginning in the wee hours. Organizers recommend arriving by public transportation if you’re participating. The Federal Triangle, Metro Center, and Archives stations are all within a short walk, as are numerous bus lines.
It’s best to avoid driving downtown in the morning and early afternoon, if possible, particularly around the National Mall.
