If your long weekend plans — or your Friday commute — include Metrorail, you might want to plan ahead.

Metro will close the Rosslyn and Court House stations for maintenance starting Friday, January 12 through Monday, January 15, affecting Blue, Orange, and Silver Line service.

The Red Line between Takoma and Forest Glen will shut down on Saturday, Jan. 13 and Sunday, Jan. 12.

(Blessedly, service will be normal on the Yellow and Green lines.)

The Rosslyn and Court House station closures will allow workers to replace rails and install fiber optic cables and platform edge lighting in the closed stations — maintenance work that could have otherwise taken several weekends to complete.

“Without the closure, the work would have caused major disruptions over multiple weekends, as trains would single track every 26 minutes or with truncated service,” per Metro’s announcement.

The Red Line closure will allow for ongoing Purple Line construction in the area. Metro workers plan to take advantage of the stoppage to patch up leaks, install new rail ties, and work on the switch system in the affected stations.

Metro recommends allowing an extra 30 minutes for your trip if it passes through the closed area.

Shuttle buses will replace trains on the Orange and Silver Lines between Foggy Bottom and Clarendon, and on the Blue Line between Foggy Bottom and Arlington Cemetery. The Arlington Cemetery stop, which usually closes early in the winter, will stay open past 7 p.m. to accommodate shuttle bus riders.

The shuttle bus routes will include two ‘express’ options: a Blue/Orange/Silver Line express with service between Arlington Cemetery and Clarendon, and an Orange/Silver Line express with service between Foggy Bottom and Ballston. Other local shuttle buses will mirror the regular Metrorail routes, stopping at each closed station.

More information on shuttles and other transportation alternatives is available here.

On the Red Line, a combination of local and express shuttle buses will also replace trains between Takoma, Silver Spring, and Forest Glen.
