Communication Eases Adams Morgan Streetscape Stress

Last September, the District Department of Transportation announced that it would undertake a large-scale redesign of the streetscape of a half-mile stretch of 18th Street between Florida Avenue and Columbia Road in Adams Morgan, including the elimination of diagonal on-street parking and the installation of improved crosswalks, more trees and sidewalk bulbouts at key intersections. But while the end product of the work will be a boon for pedestrians, many wondered whether business along the corridor would suffer, as some retailers had during similar projects along P Street NW and H Street NE. So, is that the case?

Water Main Break at Florida Avenue and U Street NW

UPDATE: (6:15 p.m.) More information just in from D.C. Water — Heymann tells DCist that D.C. Water crews are excavating at this moment to start the repair on the broken valve. The best guess on the water shut-off is approximately 4-6 hours, and that it will mostly affect businesses on the east side of 18th Street NW between Florida Avenue and Columbia Road. DDOT has opened one lane of Florida Avenue to traffic in each direction.

The Big Metrobus That Couldn’t

While DCist film critic extraordinaire Ian Buckwalter was out and about this morning, he captured this video of a Metrobus fishtailing in a futile attempt to get up the incline at the intersection of 18th and U Streets NW. It’s all the justification one needs to know that keeping buses off the roads for the rest of the day was a smart idea….
