Obama Leads Romney by Eight Points in Virginia
With fewer than 50 days to go until Election Day, President Obama has opened a considerable lead over Republican challenger Mitt Romney in Virginia, which continues to be one of the most heavily contested battleground states in the presidential election.
After a three-day period in which three of his top officials endorsed same-sex marriage while his spokespeople continued the line that his views are “evolving,” President Obama is expected to be asked about the topic directly today in an interview with ABC News.
Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich’s second ex-wife says in an interview that the former House speaker asked for an “open marriage” before separating in 1999.
A commenter forwarded this story to the DCist tipline, and we also got a press release from ABC News announcing the same program: a “50 States, 50 Days” election coverage project co-produced by ABC News and USA Today. ABC News and USA TODAY will launch an unprecedented news project on Monday, September 15, to report from every state in the nation during the 50 days leading up to the presidential election. ABC News’ anchors and…

Chandra Levy’s Mother in Town to Meet Chief Lanier
It’s hard to believe it’s been six years since congressional intern Chandra Levy disappeared. This week marks five years since her body was finally discovered in Rock Creek Park, almost 13 months after she vanished without a trace. No one has ever been charged with her murder. Today Susan Levy, Chandra’s mother, is in town to meet with MPD Chief Cathy Lanier to urge her to continue investigating Chandra’s death. Levy’s case generated national headlines…

Lightning Crashes, Along with Rain and Wind
We hope everyone brought his or her umbrella to work today, and we hope that it’s one of those doesn’t-turn-inside-out-in-the-wind ones, because we’re about to receive a severe lashing from thunderstorms this afternoon. If this radar shot, and the National Weather Services’ severe thunderstorm warning (on until 8 p.m. tonight) are any indicator—which they are—we’ll be in for a dazzling lightshow starting anywhere from now until 7 p.m. Since the warm weather we’ve been…

‘D.C. Madam’ Gets 7 Minutes of Fame
It’s only 36 hours until Deborah Jeane Palfrey makes her national television debut on ABC’s 20/20, and we’re once again torn between hope and disappointment. You’ll remember our yawns at the leak identifying Harlan “Shock and Awe” Ullman as a former client of Palfrey’s escort service, Pamela Martin and Associates. The alleged madam then kicked up her media blitz by releasing a page of phone records and promising that her high profile customer list included…
