Today is D.C. Emancipation Day, when the city celebrates the act that ended slavery within city limits in 1862.
Samuel J. Seymour, who was a five-year-old boy who was in the audience at Ford’s Theatre the night President Abraham Lincoln was shot, lived long enough to appear on a television game show in 1956.

History buffs and Civil War aficionados are in for a treat this weekend, with events marking the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Antietam, the bloodiest single day in the entirety of the war between the states.
