The Lillian and Albert Small Capital Jewish Museum, opening June 9, incorporates the 1876 Adas Israel Synagogue building.

It will be a cornerstone of a new museum that chronicles Washington’s Jewish community.

When trying to write my last Looking Back post, I couldn’t find an interesting, great building to write about — so I decided to do a Looking Back post on the last 8 months or some of Looking Back posts.

The dramatic picture of the Adas Israel Synagogue moving through downtown Washington in 1969 is what drew me to learning more about this building (see second picture in the gallery – check out this Washington Post article to see other photos). Built in 1876, the building is the oldest synagogue in Washington (however, not the oldest congregation).
