United Emerge Victorious
Sunday afternoon D.C. United went toe-to-toe with the New England Revolution in a battle for supremacy of the Eastern Conference, and arguably the entire MLS. The match did not disappoint. It was a competitive affair in which each side took turns playing from behind before United dealt the knockout blow and cruised to victory. By most standards, it was a fantastic match. Flash forward to last night. D.C. United is facing a Real Salt…

United Push Unbeaten Streak To Seven, Douse Fire 3-1
Two weeks ago, D.C. United traveled to Los Angeles to play a depleted Galaxy team and were lucky to come away with a disappointing 0-0 tie after Nate Jaqua missed two easy opportunities in front of the United goal. Determined not to fall into the trap of playing down to their competition again, United scored early in their 3-1 victory over the visiting Chicago Fire and never looked back. Fire goalie Matt Pickens bobbled…

Save the Date: United vs. Beckham FC, August 9
D.C. United announced its MLS schedule yesterday, and we’ll cut to the chase: you have exactly 183 days before David Beckham comes to Washington. He’ll be here on August 9 for a Thursday night game, but unless you’re planning to buy a full season ticket package, tickets won’t be available until July 2. And that goes for half-season and flex plans too — the August 9 match against Beckham’s LA Galaxy (formerly known as…

United Tripped Up By Revolution
D.C. United came into Saturday night’s game both optimistically and urgently. An animated crowd of 21,022 cheered enthusiastically as United was presented with the Supporter’s Shield. The match at hand would provide them with a quality opponent, the New England Revolution, indicative of the competition they would confront in the rapidly-approaching MLS Cup playoffs. Such a stage would seem the perfect situation to right the ship and make a bold statement before entering the…

Weekend Sports Roundup
Over the weekend, the Washington Wizards fell victim to that old saying “be careful what you wish for.” After barely holding off most of the Central Division for the fifth seed and a matchup with the Cleveland Cavaliers (whom the Wizards beat 3 out of 4 times during the regular season), they had a front row seat for the playoff coronation of King James. The 21-year-old LeBron James, already an MVP candidate in his third…
Quite the sports weekend for the greater DC area. Something for everyone as they say. We’ll start out at RFK with the DC United and NY Red Bulls match, for no other reason except that I was there with the pictures to prove it. Despite considering myself to be quite the soccer fan, I’m ashamed to say that this was my first ever United game. And when the Red Bulls scored twice in the first…

DC United Season Begins Sunday
The big sports story of this weekend for area sports fans is going to be the inspiring play of the George Mason men’s basketball team as they compete for the NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship. Still, we hope that you will spare a thought for your DC United, who open their 2006 season Sunday at RFK Stadium against the New York Red Bulls. Ugh. Yes, DC, the MLS team you love to hate just got…

Chelsea FC bests DC United in Clash of Champions
Going into last night’s match against Chelsea FC, there were few, outside of the diehards, who thought much of DC United’s chances. Chelsea had, after all, blown through the Premiership the year before, allowing only 15 goals and winning all but one match, proving themselves to be the class of their league. DC came in with the equivalent MLS bragging rights, but as they were mired in the middle of the standings and without last…

Weekend Sports Roundup: Movin’ On Up Edition
>> Wins on Friday against the free falling Cleveland Cavaliers and on Sunday against the Charlotte Bobcats coupled with an Indiana Pacers loss at Miami have moved the Wizards into 5th place in the Eastern Conference playoff race with just two games to go. The Wizards overall record now stands at 45-35 and the team has won four in a row since their five game losing streak. With the Pacers two games back with only…

United Wins MLS Cup, GW Falls, Brunell Benched
>> DC United scored three goals in a seven minute span to vanquish Kansas City and bring the MLS Cup back to D.C. for the first time since 1999. Former University of Virginia star Alecko Eskandarian scored two of United’s goals, while Earnie Stewart added another. United has been in the MLS Championship game five times in 9 years with their only loss coming to Chicago in 1998, a team which included current United head…
