Dupont Circle Ghost Bike Removed Again
At some point this week, a ghost bike that had sat on and off at the intersection of Connecticut Avenue and R and 20th Streets NW for the last three years was removed.
Can you legislate a culture shift, using the law to change the way drivers perceive cyclists? That was was one of the questions that a D.C. Council committee pondered yesterday.

This Committee Hearing Will Break Your Heart
Last Friday’s D.C. Council hearing on pedestrian and bicycle safety was certainly one of the more emotional in recent memory, featuring several stories about cyclists and pedestrians who were killed or severely injured in incidents with vehicles.
Photo by jim_darling The driver in the accident that killed bicyclist Alice Swanson was picked up on an immigration charge Thursday, reported WUSA9. Marco Fuentes Flores was arrested at a trucking company in Sterling, two days after a WUSA9 story earlier in the week revealing Flores’ continued employment at the trucking company despite his questionable driving record. Records also show that Flores had been convicted of smuggling drugs, confined in federal prison and deported…
Photo by vassieux. We’d have questions too. Ruth Rowan, the mother of Alice Swanson, reached out to the media yesterday — Rowan is concerned that the driver who was operating the garbage truck that collided with Swanson on July 8, 2008 is still on the road, despite a questionable history behind the wheel. Marco Flores Fuentes, the driver in question, “had five driving violations…within the five months before [Swanson] was killed,” “an accident eight days” after…
UPDATE: A ghost bike was placed on the scene this afternoon. The Washington Area Bicyclist Association says that they did not place the bike there, but “supports the sentiment.” Time moves quickly; sometimes, it moves too fast. Today marks two years since the death of Alice Swanson, who was killed while riding her bike in Dupont Circle in 2008. Swanson was 22. Many are leaving messages of remembrance this morning where Swanson’s ghost bike once…

Activist Legba Carrefour, the Columbia Heights resident behind the bikes, had pledged to ensure that the single memorial bike was replaced each time the…

Ghost Bikes Now ‘a Mess’
Photo by MikaAltscan Head over to why.i.hate.dc for a photo and update on the 22 ghost bikes that were placed all around the intersection of Connecticut and R NW a week ago. Looks like someone decided to let activist Legba Carrefour know they aren’t fond of his bikes. All of the remaining ghost bikes near Connecticut and R have been piled up at two locations, outside of the Cosi and at the site of the…

DPW on Ghost Bikes: The Rule is 30 Days
Courtesy Eric Gilliland The D.C. Department of Public Works finally got back to us on our question about what will be done with the 22 brand new ghost bikes that have been placed around the intersection of Connecticut and R Streets NW by activist Legba Carrefour … kinda. Here’s the boilerplate statement we received via email from DPW spokesperson Linda Grant:”… the DC Department of Public Works is responsible for removing sidewalk memorials, which…

Ghost Bikes Return, in Force, to Connecticut and R
Early this morning, 22 new ghost bikes appeared around the intersection of Connecticut Avenue, R and 20th Streets NW. There were put there by Columbia Heights resident Legba Carrefour, in an effort to protest the city’s recent removal of the Alice Swanson ghost bike by the city. Alice’s original ghost bike was placed in front of the La Tomate restaurant by the Washington Area Bicycle Association shortly after her death a little over a year…
