D.C. voting rights advocates and elected officials have been stymied in their attempts to get budget autonomy. Now they have a new plan to get it: just let residents vote on it.

As the Republican National Convention kicks off in earnest today, members of the GOP will be voting on their official platform—including a section set aside for D.C.

A group of D.C. voting rights activists are protesting Republican Arizona Rep. Trent Franks’ Glendale district office this afternoon over legislation he’s introduced on the Hill that would prohibit abortions in the District after 20 weeks.

As they do every year, tens of thousands of pro-lifers will gather on the National Mall today for the March for Life, where they will again demand further restrictions on abortions throughout the country.

The three protesters that launched a hunger strike yesterday for D.C. voting right and self-determination are planning on trying to meet with Rep. Darrell Issa (R-CA) today, in hopes of having him introduce a clean bill granting the District budgetary autonomy.

The last time that the District saw a substantial victory in its fight for voting rights, self-determination and statehood was 1973, when the city was given limited Home Rule. Three protesters are hoping that the next big victory comes much more quickly — because they’ll be fasting until the District gets it.

Today, D.C. leadership stated that they “regret” they cannot support Rep. Darrell Issa’s (R-CA) proposal to afford the city more budgetary control at the expense of abortion funding.

Would you give up some autonomy to get some autonomy? That’s a question District officials may soon have to answer.
