Week Around the -Ists

SFist witnessed a new apartment building tszuj the skyline with spectacular, gaudy turquoise aplomb, the (informal) renaming of the Mission/SOMA neighborhood border, the return of the Maltese Falcon, the Mayor Gavin Newsom mea culpa-ing over his Hawaiian getaway during the oil spill, and double-decker buses hitting the streets of San Francisco. Oh, and some baseball player named Barry Bonds is a liar whose pants, it seems, are totally on fire. LAist continues to cover the…

Elsewhere in the Ist-a-verse

Protest over national vs. regional chains, the never-ending debate over the place of cars and bicycles in our metropolises, professional sports scandals, remembering a solemn day, and being issued a search warrant – it all happened across our sites this week! Another banner week at Chicagoist started off with daily reports from food writer Lisa Shames on her attempt to eat only locally grown and raised foodstuffs all week as part of a farmers market…

Elsewhere in the Ist-a-verse

There was very little else for Londonist to be concerned with when the threat of a Tube strike became a very unpleasant reality. The inconvenience was extreme: there aren’t many alternatives to the Tube in London despite the best efforts of the Londonist team to get everyone from A to B. Brighter news came in the form of the first ever female Yeoman Warder, or Beefeater as the position is more commonly known, and…

Carmello Does What She Can to Save Aimee

If you walk past a theater marquee and the sign displays something ridiculous, like Beverly Hills: 90210: The Musical, three little words should make you put your reservations aside and rush to the auditorium: “Starring Carolee Carmello.” The overwhelmingly talented musical theater star, known for her Broadway work in such vehicles as Parade and Urinetown, could sell just about anything. Unfortunately, she’s got her work cut out with her in Kathie Lee Gifford’s stab at…

Elsewhere in the Ist-a-verse

Spring appears to have, er, sprung, at least temporarily, in most of the Ist-A-Verse, so naturally, we’re all feeling pretty good. (Yes, we know that spring doesn’t officially start till later this month. Just let us enjoy our weather!) And that makes us that much more eager to share all of the nifty things we’re up to… Over at Sampaist, spring has more than sprung: it’s sweltering! But, as everyone knows, museums are an ideal…

The Elected @ Black Cat

Deep in the incestuous (professionally speaking) world of indie rock, there is Rilo Kiley. Based out of Los Angeles, it isn’t that much of a surprise that the band was founded by two former child stars, Jenny Lewis of Troop Beverly Hills fame, and Blake Sennett, aka Salute Your Shorts’ Ronnie Pinksy, aka Joseph ‘Joey the Rat’ Epstein from Boy Meets World. More interesting is the number of popular side projects on which these…

Shocking News: Email is Free

The Examiner has a story today that kind of boggles our noggins. It seems A. Scott Bolden, candidate for the At-Large seat on the D.C. Council, is upset with his opponent, current councilmember Phil Mendelson, for emailing a newsletter to about 1,000 consituents last week. Bolden argued that the emails constitute a violation of D.C. election laws, which prohibit councilmembers from mailing more than 99 newsletters or press releases at a time within 90 days…

The Weekly Feed: Spanish Language Anthem Edition

The Revolving Torte It seems like it’s the season for pastry chef musical chairs, as the Washingtonian’s Todd Kliman lets us in on a bevy of changes in Washington’s world of caster sugar and ganache. Equinox’ Lisa Scruggs starts the chain reaction, as she is headed across the river to serve as dessert overseer for the Neighborhood Restaurant Group (the folks who own Vermillion, Evening Star Café, Tallula, and Rustico). She and the managers for…

Early Mornings at the D.C. Jail

Today the City Paper profiled imprisoned tagger Borf, who by all indicators is comfortably riding out his month-long jail sentence. And while the article contains a number of interesting tokens (Borf trades drawings for vegetable servings, for one), we were most taken aback by the D.C. Jail’s early morning wake up calls: Sitting in a cage behind a glass wall wearing an orange jumpsuit, Tsombikos looks defiant, not shaken. He smiles easily. His eyes are…

Morning Roundup: Expressive T-Shirt Edition

News today has it that the U.S. Capitol Police seemed to have forgotten about the First Amendment on Tuesday night, when they arrested anti-war activist Cindy Sheehan and Beverly Young, the wife of a Republican representative, at the State of the Union address for wearing “expressive t-shirts.” Ironically, Young’s shirt was pro-military: “Support the Troops — Defending Our Freedom.” Capitol Police Terrance Gainer issued an apology and dropped the charges against the two. District Claims…
