Bike DC Set for October 17

With Car Free Day coming up tomorrow, it’s as good a time as ever to remind everyone of another two-wheeled celebration — Bike DC. The October 17 event will feature two routes — the 25-mile Capital Ride and the 12-mile Family Ride — that weave their way through parts of the District and Arlington, including a stretch on the George Washington Parkway. There is one catch that might make the rides a little longer…

Triathlon Becomes Duathlon

Last month we reported that the District’s first official triathlon, the Nation’s Triathlon, was a go. After months of haggling with competing jurisdictions for permit, race organizers got the final go-ahead for the event, which would include a swim in the Potomac River, a bike ride up Rock Creek Park, and a run to the U.S. Capitol and back. Plenty of readers made jokes about swimming in the Potomac. Hell, so did I –…

Morning Roundup: Crowds and Clouds Edition

Good morning, Washington. The bad news is that today looks like it’ll be a little bit cloudy. The good news is that as of 8 a.m., WMATA reports no Metro service alerts. The weekend promises just the opposite: Saturday and Sunday’s weather will be pleasant, but WMATA says that all five Metro tracks will be undergoing work. Add in the local disruptions that will be caused by Sunday’s Marine Corps Marathon, and you’ve got some…

Out and About: Weekend Picks

It’s Labor Day weekend, and you thought everybody had gotten the hell out of Dodge City, hadn’t you? Well, they probably have, and we’re experiencing serious envy of anyone who’s on a beach right now with a margarita in hand. But don’t despair – there’s still tons to do in D.C. this weekend, and we’ve rounded up the best of the best for you to do in a special extended version of Weekend Picks. But…

Morning Roundup: A Tad Toasty Outside Edition

Serene, isn’t it? The picture at right, snapped by adrummer boy and posted to DCist photos, reminds us of how scenic dusk along the Potomac River can be. Of course, such scenic serenity can only do so much in helping one forget that today is officially the day of heat-related death — the peak heat index is set to hit 105, air quality is ranked at orange, and the UV alert is “above normal.” It’s…
