Attention Ward 1 residents. Next time there’s a fire at your house, please try to have it extinguished quietly. Your neighbors might be annoyed.
The Cleveland Park listserv is the biggest of its kind in the city, and it just turned 13. We asked co-creator and moderator Bill Adler what he loves and hates about his lively listserv.

Cleveland Park Residents Want Ban on Leaf Blowers
A Cleveland Park resident has identified the latest pestilence he would like to see the D.C. Council confront: gasoline-powered leaf blowers.
Photo by Supaqool Cleveland Park Email List purveyor Bill Adler likes to send out April Fool’s jokes to his subscribers. Last year, it was the fictional escape of a “Loof Lirpa” from the National Zoo. The year before that, there was the big announcement that a developer was planning on bringing a Pet Hotel to Cleveland Park. This year, a mock press release from DDOT announced the creation of a paperless parking ticket system….

Uptown Theater Not Closing, Despite Rumors
A flurry of frantic, angry emails began around 6 p.m. last night on the Cleveland Park Listserve and moved seemingly all over town by 8 p.m. It was the end of civilization as we know it! A catastrophe of epic proportions! Alert the National Guard! The Uptown Theater might be closing! Thankfully, cooler heads have now prevailed. Turns out the rumor got started because the Jews for Jesus outfit McLean Bible Church put up…

Go Home Already: The Cameras Are Talking
>> We note the passing of one of the sporting world’s all-time greats: former Grambling State University coach Eddie Robinson. Robinson coached the Tigers from 1941 through 1997, compiling a record of 408-165-15. Redskins fans owe Robinson a debt of gratitude for coaching up the man who would ultimately replace him at Grambling, Doug Williams, who won the MVP award for leading the Skins to victory in Super Bowl XXII. >> Thank you, DCist…

94.7 the Globe: Not Half Bad
We’ve complained about D.C.’s bad radio before, so when we heard about 94.7 “the Globe” we were skeptical. But after a few recommendations from people whose musical taste we respect, we checked it out — and it’s not half bad. The playlist is mainly mid 80s to mid 90s “alternative,” but also includes some classic rock and newer stuff. We heard a mix from the Beatles and the Doors to Talking Heads to U2…

(Good) Radio Free D.C.
Driving down I-81 in central Virginia earlier this year, we heard something we haven’t heard in awhile: a radio station playing good music. This, and the announcement of “eco-station” 94.7 the Globe got us thinking: why doesn’t D.C. have a good independent music station? Other big cities have great listener-supported music stations, like KEXP in Seattle and WFMU in New York, and many other cities have decent student-run college stations. But D.C. has neither. About…

Citywide Listserv Kicks Off
In recent years, various neighborhood listservs have popped up across the District, serving as hyper-local sounding boards and electronic community forums. There’s NewHillEast, WoodleyFriends, cleveland-park, HillcrestDC, AdamsMorgan, columbia heights, FriendsOfSligoCreek, gloverpark, MPD-1D — you get the idea. So much commentary is exchanged on these many listservs that the City Paper’s blog, City Desk, has taken to publishing twice-weekly excerpts of the best and weirdest that gets exchanged. But one new listserv is looking to fight…

Meet Cleveland Park’s Newest Resident
She doesn’t like George W. Bush, because “the President persists in misleading the American people.” She is, however, a guarded Marion Barry fan, who she admires because of “[h]is perseverance, his political stamina, [and] his savvy.” When asked about 2 Amy’s, she steers you to Sorriso, but when asked about Spices she responds that “I really don’t like to talk about restaurants since I never get to experience food.” She’s Ariel, or Artificial Robotic Intelligent…
