People’s Book, an independent bookstore with a large children’s section, is opening in Takoma Park on Tuesday.

Workers and their employer reached a deal that guarantees wage increases for nearly everyone in the union. The deal was negotiated in under a year, less time than most contracts typically take.

It’s a shift in position for the bookstore owners, who had initially resolutely declined to voluntarily recognize the employee union.

If successful, Politics and Prose would become what appears to be the only bookstore in the District with a unionized workforce.

Formerly known as Idle Time Books, the bookstore is aiming to become a hub for community activities.

For the fifth year in a row, the marathon is happening on Upshur Street NW.

And the spaces that previously held now-shuttered restaurants Ruta del Vino and Hank’s Cocktail Bar are currently in negotiations for new businesses to come in.

This follows the announcement of a second location by Union Market.

It’s called Solid State Books, and it’s offering books (duh), programming, and a coffee bar.
