Overheard in D.C.: Documentary Film
The majority of Overheards in D.C. fall into only a few categories: funny sex stuff, dumb tourists and weird kids. There’s the occasional amusing political thing, or some quip that somebody sent in because they think they or their friends are funny. But there are always those that make absolutely no sense unless you are knowledgeable about some extremely narrow area of trivia, such as say, documentaries about lost and possibly mythical Brazilian cities. Quote…

United Hold Serve In Copa Sudamericana
Despite having to fend off a persistent Chivas Guadalajara attack for most of the game and playing a man down for 50 minutes, United pulled out a 2-1 victory in the first leg of the Copa Nissan Sudamericana home-and-home series. From the get-go the Goats took advantage of quick, incisive passing to carve through the United midfield. Four times in the opening 16 minutes Chivas attackers had a clear line to the goal, yet…

Preview: Bonde do Role at the Black Cat
Music can be just as good in another language — just ask, say, Skid Row fans in Moscow. The same is true for Bonde do Role’s shows in the States. The trio from Curitiba in southern Brazil sing mostly in Portuguese, and while the meaning of the lyrics doesn’t come across, the band’s booming beats, goofy samples, and high energy stage antics (dancing, writhing, humping each other) make for a sweaty, ridiculous time. The group,…

Weekly Music Agenda
MONDAY >> They put it pretty well themselves, and since it’s all about them anyway, we’re just going to repeat what the Black Cat had to say about their anniversary party tonight: “After 14 years of pouring you guys drinks, then picking up the glasses, working the doors, and sweeping the floors, we’ve decided that it’s time to dedicate a night to ourselves. Black Cat staff bands, staff DJs, and staffers will be hanging out…

Preview: Planet Arlington World Music Festival

Fear not, jazz-lovers, for today we remedy the problem by informing you of Saturday’s Planet Arlington World Music Festival. The festival, which begins at 4 p.m. at the Iwo Jima Memorial grounds, will feature Hugh Masekela (pictured, Legendary South African Trumpeter), Lila Downs (Latin…

Sold Out RFK Awaits Beckham, Galaxy
The Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Beckham Circus has arrived. Forty five thousand spectators will pack into RFK this evening to witness the production. All eyes will be on English mega-star David Beckham, but his performance will likely be relegated to a side show, as an ankle injury will limit him to sub minutes (if any). Even so, the main event of the night is sure to be exciting enough to keep the third-biggest…

Elsewhere in the Ist-a-verse
LAist is experimenting with blogging dates from J-Date, but finds the best men are found offline. Some date vicariously online and that is one reason why porn is big — really freaking big — so they ask if they should cover XXX since the heart of it lays in the city’s San Fernando Valley. A writer grapples with her food porn photography obsession, another gets censored on Flickr, one gets scooped by the LA…

United Taste Victory
It took D.C. United over four hundred minutes to claim their first lead of the 2007 MLS season. After nurturing it, bolstering it, and holding off Chivas USA’s desperate final attacks, they parlayed it into their first victory of the season. Before 14,267 at RFK Stadium yesterday afternoon, United built on Thursday’s draw and used a spirited performance to secure a 2-1 victory, bringing their record to 1-3-1. Due to player fatigue (three matches…
