The Capitals opened their shortened 2013 training camp on Sunday afternoon. Here’s a round-up of Caps-related news from the past couple of days.

Does Playing Spoiler Motivate the Caps?
Jose Theodore made 28 saves as the Caps beat Boston last night, 3-2.Photo by Ghost_Bear.With a 3-2 overtime victory on Monday night against the Boston Bruins, the Washington Capitals notched their 52nd win of the season and added even more points to their already-clinched Presidents’ Trophy haul. For the Caps, the road to the Stanley Cup is now paved with advantages as the league’s number one seed. But Washington also has a chance to make…
Mike Knuble couldn’t get this one past Senators goalie Brian Elliott; the Caps fell5-4 in overtime. Photo by Ghost_Bear.Going 0-1-2 in your past three games isn’t the worst stat in the books, but it’s certainly unusual for the league-leading Washington Capitals. After losing 5-4 to the Ottawa Senators in overtime last night, the Capitals traced their problems back to poor performance in the first period — a recurring problem in their last three outings. “For…

Caps Flirt With a Loss, Decide to Keep Winning
The Caps had to stretch for it, but they got their tenth straight win on Sunday. Photo by clydeorama. You’d have to be a Vulcan to begrudge Alex Ovechkin his Wayne Gretzky arm pump after scoring what turned out to be the game-winning goal against Tampa Bay on Sunday. The Caps had just blown a 2-0 lead late in the third. With 8:28 left in the game, the clock paused to give the ice…

Caps Briefing: Undefeated
Fans enraptured by a second period Caps goal against the Toronto Maple Leafs. After last night’s 6-4 victory over Toronto, the season the Caps are undefeated and scoring two goals for every one they give up. They have been defensively perfect from the start of any match until they have at least three goals of their own. Superstars Alexander Ovechkin and Alexander Semin have scored three points in each game. Both Caps starting goalies…

Caps Briefing: Laich, Fedorov Returning
The Capitals have agreed to terms on a one year contract with former MVP Sergei Fedorov. Fedorov has won three Stanley Cups while playing center, wing and defense. He has also been voted the NHL’s best defensive forward. He reportedly had many contract offers from teams throughout the NHL and Russia’s new KHL, but he took a 33 percent paycut from last season to stay with the Caps for $4 million. This could have something…

Caps Briefing: Green Stacks Green
Mike Green came to terms with the Capitals today on a four-year, $21 million dollar contract to play ice hockey. In my first post on DCist, all the way back in October of 2006, I described a hard-fought match between the Caps and the Avalanche that reached its climax when “Green, the Caps star minor-league defenseman, who is expected to show signs of someday belonging in the NHL by the end of this season,…

Caps Briefing: Summer Lovin’?
It’s far too early to report an actual relationship, but we got a kick out of this anyway. A brand new blog honestly titled Hot Leader Celeb reports, in questionable English prose, that Alexander Ovechkin is seeing a woman named Lena Lenskaya. This is based on a picture of the two of them standing next to each other at a party. We’re sure our readers will agree: if you stand next to a girl…

Caps Briefing: How Worthless Are They?
According to Forbes magazine, the Washington Capitals are the third most worthless team in the National Hockey League. This is a big step up from last year, when they were number one! Of course, being businessmen and not hockey fans, the boys at Forbes have failed to take into account the kinds of younger, developing players that the Caps hold, ready to carry them to success either this year or in the immediate future. If…

Caps Briefing: What’s not to Laich?
The Capitals have re-signed center Brooks Laich (pronounced LIKE) to a one year contract. Laich is a fast-skating, defensively responsible young center who can also play on the wing. The Capitals acquired him from the Ottawa Senators in 2004 in a trade for Washington’s all time leading scorer, Peter Bondra. Returning to a recently broken club policy, “financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.” According to TSN, however, the contract is worth $725,000.00, and…
