D.C. Ends Year With Another Budget Surplus
At a press conference, Mayor Vince Gray said the city’s “rainy day” fund reached $1.75 billion in fiscal year 2013. However, “this does not mean we can go on a spending spree,” Gray said.
Some advocates for affordable housing and other anti-poverty programs are disappointed the District’s entire $417 million budget surplus was added to its emergency cash reserves.
The District government reported a total surplus of $417 million for the 2012 fiscal year, city officials said today. The excess revenue will be added to D.C.’s emergency fund, bringing the city’s “rainy-day” savings to nearly $1.5 billion.
