Open City Opens in Woodley Park

Yesterday DCist popped by Open City in Woodley Park, a new “coffeehouse/diner/bar” from the folks behind Adams Morgan’s popular Tryst and The Diner. While we didn’t try the food our companion dined on decadent-looking chocolate cake, and the plates going by seemed to match the generally good quality we’ve found at the proprietor’s Adams Morgan establishments. Over at the Post’s City Guide, Open City has gotten mixed reviews, perhaps a reflection of some of the…

Bus Navigation: You Can Thank Us Later

We sometimes wonder whether the work we do here at DCist — remember, we do this all for free in our spare time — is worthwhile. Then there are instances where we see first-hand where we’re doing some good. Remember our post last week about different tactics on how to take the bus into the heart of the 18th Street corridor in Adams Morgan? We suggested that standing at the bus stop on Calvert Street…

Bicyclist Hit in Woodley Near Black Tie and Boots Ball

We apologize if we’re going into Inaugural overload. But when your city is effectively shut down, it is difficult to really avoid it. So last night, this DCist did a little tour to see what was going on around town. At dinner in Dupont Circle, a friend said of the regular stream of helicopters circling the city’s central neighborhoods: “Is this like the Tet offensive? Limos of all sorts of flavors and colors (black, white,…

In Memoriam: Pearson’s Samuel Eisenberg

Plain Old Pearson’s, the storied liquor store on Wisconsin Avenue, is closed today because of the death of Samuel Eisenberg, who introduced discount liquor to the nation’s capital after Prohibition. Pearson’s was originally a pharmacy, but Eisenberg started a small liquor department that eventually grew and grew into what we know today. “Doc” passed away over the weekend at age 98. From Pearson’s obituary: Doc loved the excitement he created. Everyone in Washington waited for…

Out and About This Morning

As we’ve mentioned, lines to vote today have been forcasted to be long, and indeed they are. This photo here is of the voting site at the 2nd District Police headquarters on Idaho Avenue. Over at the International Union of Operating Engineers hall in Glover Park, the line to vote stretched down Calvert Street nearly to the western gate to the vice president’s house at the Naval Observatory. (Here’s the Post’s morning update on…

Two Steps Forward, One Step Back

Don’t get us wrong. DCist likes the bus. We ride it everyday. And we appreciate all that Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority does to get us around town. But we have to wonder whether WMATA realizes that when it tries to do good, it can create more problems for commuters. A case in point: Yesterday, DCist was waiting for a 90/92 bus at the corner of Calvert Street and Connecticut Avenue in Woodley Park. We…

‘Smiling’ Teenager Shoots Another on Columbia Road

First Georgetown was rocked this past weekend with a fatal stabbing on M Street during the early-morning hours, now Adams Morgan has been the scene of a shooting, this time happening in the early evening on busy Columbia Road yesterday. The Post reports that a teenager on a bike pushed another teen down to the ground before shooting him. Witnesses said the shooter was “all smiling from ear to ear.” The wounded teen then…

Bur-what Developing an Identity

It seems that Burleith, that unassuming neighborhood often mistakenly called “Upper Georgetown” is developing a bit of its own commercial identity. The business strip of Wisconsin Avenue between R Street and the Social Safeway has gained a new restaurant, the Curry Club, which one local food reviewer tells DCist could become quite popular. The executive chef, Chris Payton, learned how to cook curry when his wife, Princess Parule (who started BBC America six years ago)…
