Morning Roundup: Congratulations, Cal Edition
Okay, okay — we know, this is a Nats town now. But it’d be churlish not to congratulate Cal Ripken Jr. on his election to the Baseball Hall of Fame. Many Washingtonians regularly made the trek to Camden Yards during his streak, and to them Cal felt as much like a hometown hero as any athlete. So it’s good (if unsurprising) to see Ripken receive the nod. And he did it in style: Ripken’s name…

Morning Roundup: Computer Glitch Edition
Good morning, Washington. Get ready for another windy day, with some clouds and a high of 55 degrees. In news that should instill confidence in everyone planning to vote in Virginia on Nov. 7, a computer glitch has already been found in the electronic ballots that are to be used. It only affects the summary page and not the actual voting, or so election officials say. Senate candidate Jim Webb will appear in the summary…

Nats Lose Round Two of Beltway Series
The highly anticipated Battle of the Beltway ended its second round yesterday with the Nationals losing the weekend series to the Orioles at Camden Yards. The series concluded this year’s meetings between the two teams. Looking back on this budding rivalry, it is clear that the Nats and Orioles played themselves to a stalemate. Each team won its home series by taking 2 of 3 games. Each team finds itself struggling to stay out…
No, there isn’t anything mysterious about the headline — a couple really did get arrested for asking a police officer for directions in Baltimore, reports WBAL 11. As the story goes, Joshua Kelly and Llara Brook, of Chantilly, Virginia spent last Saturday in Baltimore, enjoying a company picnic and taking in an Orioles game at Camden Yards. As they drove out, they got lost, stopping to ask a police officer for directions. This, it seems,…

During yesterday’s town hall meeting to discuss the fate of the city’s public library system, the Mayor revealed himself to be no friend to our most notorious big box—the Mies Van der Rohe-designed Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library. And he made no new friends…

Compensation Issues for Angelos
Adding to the list of subjects DCist wanted to tackle during our server downtime is the staredown Peter Angelos is having with Major League Baseball over his ridiculous claims of ownership of the D.C. market. DCist is shocked to the levels that MLB is going to satisfy Angelos’s demands for reparations when we land the Expos. Talks are currently ongoing regarding giving Angelos an annual lump sum payment should Orioles revenue fall below a certain…

Group Attacks Stadium Plan
Nearly as soon as it was announced, a website has been launched criticizing a city plan to use public tax dollars to construct a stadium for the Expos near the Anacostia River on South Capitol Street. Under the proposed financing scheme, the city would issue massive public bonds, which would “cost as much as $43.5 million a year to service.” These payments would be covered by charging the team rent, instituting a tax for sales…
