More Boos for Fenty at Dunbar Commencement

Image courtesy WJLA Think D.C. Mayor Adrian Fenty is used to getting booed by now? In April, there were boos at his post-South Capitol shooting press conference. Then there were boos at Opening Day at Nationals Park. Today, the mayor received yet another round of boos, this time from students and parents at Dunbar Senior High School’s commencement ceremony. WJLA/ABC7 reports that these most recent boos were apparently due to a perception that Fenty…

Could Leo Alexander Help Swing the Mayor’s Race?

Leo Alexander, candidate for mayor Second-tier candidates have a long history swinging elections one way or another. Witness the accusations lobbed at Ralph Nader to this day over his taking vital votes from Al Gore in the 2000 presidential election. While the District’s mayoral race has been presented as a settled contest between D.C. Council Chair Vince Gray and Mayor Adrian Fenty, former TV reporter Leo Alexander has slowly worked his way into contention,…

Fenty Campaign Praises Reading Gains With Unfortunate Typos

It’s only a Facebook wall post, but the context here makes this just too funny. (Hat tip to DCist reader Brandon Fuller)….

Fenty Outmaneuvers Gray at Ward 8 Straw Poll

Looks like there was a tiny bit of drama at this weekend’s Ward 8 Democrats mayoral forum. The event, which marked the first straw poll of the 2010 campaign season, featured seven candidates, including incumbent Adrian Fenty, who we hear got booed by a significant portion of the crowd. But the real brouhaha took place during the straw poll, as WAMU’s Patrick Madden reports. Previously registered Ward 8 voters went for D.C. Council Chair Vincent…

Norton Challenger Proposes Civil Disobedience

Photo by AlbinoFlea It’s not hard to find someone who’s frustrated that District residents still don’t have full voting rights. But no one is as willing to act on that frustration as Doug Sloan, it seems. Sloan, who is challenging D.C. Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton to be the District’s non-voting representative, proposed a radical idea today to get Congress’ attention — block the bridges carrying commuters in from Virginia. “If you really want to…

The D.C. Board of Elections and Ethics is tweeting updates this morning as 2010 candidates stop by on the first day to pick up nominating petitions. Starting today, candidates have until Wednesday, July 7 to collect the required number of signatures in order to appear on the ballot for the September primary elections. We can expect to see campaign volunteers hitting up high pedestrian traffic areas, like outside of major retailers and Metro station…

Don Peebles Still Not Giving Up the Ghost

Don Peebles Over at WCP’s Housing Complex this morning, Lydia DePillis correctly notes that despite accepting a speaking engagement at an upcoming D.C. Chamber of Commerce luncheon, erstwhile maybe-mayoral candidate Don Peebles hasn’t been heard from in a month, leading most local politics watchers to … pretty much forget about him. This guy can’t still be thinking about running for mayor this late in the game, can he? Apparently, he can. A Peebles spokesperson…

Activists Stage Digital Sit-In on Gray’s Facebook Pages

Back in the day, if you really wanted to make your point in the political arena, you’d march a crowd over to the office of your local elected official and demand that they do or not do something. Or you’d get your supporters to flood their office with calls, faxes or emails. These days, you just need a lot of folks with a few minutes and a Facebook page. Over the last two days, supporters…

Vincent Orange Takes His First Steps Back into Politics

Get ready for a lot more orange in your life, D.C. Former Ward 5 councilman Vincent Orange is set to kickoff his formal campaign for D.C. Council Chair on Wednesday morning. But really, the campaign started this afternoon, when Orange appeared on NewsChannel 8’s NewsTalk with Bruce DePuyt — sporting, naturally, a bright orange tie. Orange steps into the campaign to challenge current At-large Council member Kwame Brown. Ward 2’s Jack Evans had previously…

Vince Gray: Election Year is a Bad Time to Raise Taxes

Those pesky Save Our Safety Net folks (the same ones who got several D.C. Council members to put on superhero capes last week) got up in D.C. Council Chairman Vincent Gray’s face with a camera during a lobbying push this morning. You’ve got to admire their moxie. These grassroots budget activists are pushing a proposal to increase income taxes on the wealthiest District residents (9.0 percent for those earning between $200,000 and $1 million, and…
