Ceremonial Olympic Torch To Be Carried Through D.C.

Ah, the Olympics. The grandeur, the triumph, the three weeks every four years when we, as a nation, pretend we actually care about swimming or figure skating. And even though recent American attempts to land an Olympiad have fallen miserably short, at least D.C. will still get to be a part of the build-up to the 2012 Games.

Incredibly Deaf Musical Sounds Perfectly In Tune

Jay Allen Zimmerman’s Incredibly Deaf Musical is one of those shows that makes you grateful DC now has its own Fringe Festival. Because Zimmerman’s story is one that everyone in the city deserves to hear. Pardon my presumptuousness. It’s one that everyone deserves to see, to feel and to experience. Zimmerman is deaf, or at least “mostly deaf” in the Miracle Max sense of the phrase. He cannot hear speech, but can absorb some music…

D.C. Museums Get Hot

What happens when a bunch of museum professionals try to brainstorm how to boost attendance during what is historically one of the quietest times of year? Apparently, some creative linguistic contortions to connect an eclectic smattering events to the chosen theme: “Warm Up To A Museum.” Yes, you can learn about hot wax at the Textile Museum, “warm up to cool art” at the Canadian Embassy, check out an exhibit on global warming at the…

Hayes Awards Recognize Small Companies

The nominations for the Helen Hayes Awards were announced last night, despite the cancellation of the traditional reception at the Canadian Embassy. As today’s Post notes, the nominations had their share of surprises. Not surprising, especially to veterans of the D.C. theater scene, was the dominance of the Kennedy Center (17 nominations), Signature Theatre (15 nominations) and the Shakespeare Theatre (14 nominations). With pockets significantly deeper than smaller theater companies, large theaters can spend significant…
