Many D.C. residents and members of Congress oppose fencing around the Capitol, and hope it doesn’t become a regular part of the landscape.

“It’s such a peaceful day. It really feels like things have started to turn around,” said one visitor to the newly opened Capitol grounds.

Officials say removal is expected to begin on Friday, and take three days.

Its introduction comes a day after the Capitol’s security perimeter shrank from three miles to just over a mile.
