Morning Roundup: Tree Fraud Edition

Good morning, Washington. Given that A Charlie Brown Christmas was on TV last night, this story seems especially rough. Apparently some folks stole $1500 worth of Christmas trees from the Boy Scouts that were selling them. Remember kids: leave your clearly marked tree receipt out for Santa if you want your presents delivered promptly and with a minimum of additional paperwork. Latest On Taylor Murder Investigation, Funeral: The Post reports on the few details…

D.C. Leaders Upset with Nationals Over Md. Gala

D.C. officials are apparently stunned to find that the money they’ve spent on the new Nationals stadium isn’t translating into the sort of unconditional loyalty they might like. Turns out the team’s 2008 Dream Foundation Dream Gala (it’s dream-related, see) will be held at National Harbor in Prince George’s County, Md., and the Examiner reports that Mayor Adrian Fenty, D.C. Council Chair Vincent Gray and just about every other D.C. leader is throwing a temper…

Only his youngest son still looks at him with admiration, mostly…

This week in the Overheard offices, we were shocked and appalled. Are people being extra insensitive out there on the mean streets of D.C.? Aren’t we all fat and happy on Christmas cookies and eggnog, wading knee-deep in nostalgia after another viewing of A Charlie Brown Christmas? Whatever it is that is inspiring heightened grinch-itude in Washington flared hot as a roasting chestnut this week, as we had submissions potentially offensive to various races, sexual…

Opinionist: DC Christmas Tree Controversy

On Sundays, DCist publishes opinion pieces about life in D.C. The opinions below belong entirely to the author, who, in this case, is reader Timothy Ebner. To add your opinion to the fray, please email me. Leave it to our Capitol City to make politics out of the holiday season. Apparently political correctness now goes as far as Christmas trees or should I say Holiday trees? This year House Speaker J. Dennis Hastert (R-Ill.) wrote…

Trees and Lights and Bonfires, Oh My

(From DCist contributor Amadie Hart) Christmas tree lots, nurseries, and farms all around the area were buzzing yesterday with shoppers looking for just the right piece of greenery to festoon with lights and ornaments. The holiday season is here, and area residents are rushing out to make sure they aren’t left with a Charlie Brown Christmas tree. Whether you cut your own tree, adopt a live tree, or drag it home from the corner…
