The Smithsonian National Zoo confirmed Friday that four year-old Amani the cheetah gave birth earlier this month to two male cubs.

The cheetah cubs have already made their Instagram debut.

Granger “was playful and pensive at the same time, rolling around in his sand pit one moment and then watching the clouds roll by the next.”

Cheetahs and dogs seem like an unlikely match—or even a disaster waiting to happen—but a very sweet, brotherly friendship is on display at the Metro Richmond Zoo right now.

He was the last living cheetah produced via artificial insemination.

A liter of cheetah cubs born in November at the National Zoo’s Front Royal campus nearly died because of mistreatment from their mother, but luckily veterinarians were able to save them.

Tony Barthel, curator of the Cheetah Conservation Station, said “Our team worked tirelessly for a long time to get Draco to eat on his own. Ultimately, his long-term prognosis would not permit him a good quality of life.”

A spokesperson for the Zoo says that at approximately 11:40 a.m., “a keeper heard bleating from the cheetah yard.”

Initial tests indicate that Tumai, a 13-year-old female, died from a tumor that caused her spleen to rupture.

U.S. Olympic sprinters Carmelita Jeter and Justin Gatlin will be at the National Zoo this week to meet the cheetah cubs that were named after them.
