Neighbors applauded when Department of General Services and Department of Parks and Recreation presenters announced at a June meeting that the amphitheater plan had been scrapped.

Although the District government is trying to go forward with plans to memorialize the late Godfather of Go-Go with a new outdoor performing arts venue, the people who live around the planned site aren’t so thrilled.

The District introduced a few revisions to the design for the planned Chuck Brown Park set to open later this year in Ward 5’s Langdon Park.

District officials hope that by the end of the summer, a large section of Ward 5’s Langdon Park will be completely transformed into Chuck Brown Park, in memory of the “Godfather of Go-Go.”

Mayor Vince Gray declared that today—and future August 22s—will be known in the District as Chuck Brown Day, a tribute to the late Godfather of Go-Go who died in May at 75.

Mayor Vince Gray asked the D.C. Council to rename the western half of Ward 5’s Langdon Park as Chuck Brown Park, encompassing the land between 18th and 20th streets NE just south of Rhode Island Avenue.
