Morning Roundup: Strange Currencies Edition

Good morning, Washington. It’s news of the weird day today on DCist, as the Post tells the bizarre story of two 2nd-year engineering students from U-Va. who have been charged with the kidnapping of a man in Tysons Corner and demanding $500,000 in ransom. Both the two kidnappers and the victim are Chinese nationals who had been living with host families in Virginia while attending college. Police arrested Guanyu Lu and Baichuan Shu, both 19,…

Free Bicycle Lights from WABA and DDOT

Now that it’s getting darker earlier, bicyclists in the city need to be more careful about riding at night. But if you’re like me, you’ve been putting off buying a safety light for oh, forever. So I’m planning on being first in line this Friday, November 2 at the Suntrust Plaza in Adams Morgan to snag free front and rear bike lights courtesy the Washington Area Bicyclist Association and DDOT. All you have to do…

Morning Roundup: Crime Back Up Edition

Good morning, Washington. We hope you had a safe weekend and were able to enjoy the cooler weather on Sunday thanks to the rain brought in by remnants of Tropical Storm Barry. The respite from the heat, which looks like it may last through Wednesday, is one of the few things we can find to be upbeat about as we go over today’s headlines. As you’ve already heard, Tonya Bell, a 30-year-old woman from Oxon…

Ask DCist: Give Me … a Keg … of Beer

DCist reader David writes in with this important question: Where does one get kegs in D.C.? I’ve lived here around a year, and have no idea. Online price lists are a plus, as is a NW location. We hear you, David. Sure, we’re not in college anymore, but sometimes when you’re set to throw a really big par-tay, going with a keg can be the most cost effective and least messy (no bottles to clean…

Excerpts From a Crime Report

Obviously, crime is no laughing matter. Reading the crime reports included in the Post’s District Extra section can be quite sobering; it’s tough to grasp just how many people come face to face with crime on a daily basis. However, there are times when it’s healthy to chuckle about the minor stuff, so today we bring you Excerpts from a Crime Report. Many thanks to the Post and the MPD. — MICHIGAN AVE., 600 block,…

Coalition of the Swilling: Rock Like an Egyptian

Off the 18th St. strip in Adams Morgan is a bar that we’re a little hesitant to tell you about. You see, this is Adams Morgan — a neighborhood full of people with big beads or popped collars, descending on weekends like a plague of locusts, ending their nights by scarfing down jumbo slices at 3 A.M. Five years ago? Maybe. Nowadays, we’re curmudgeons. One of the exceptions to our general dislike of Adams…
