Why Washington Walks
A new report from the Brookings Institution shows that the D.C. metro area has the most “walkable places” per capita of any American city — one for every 264,000 people, beating out even New York City for walkability. Visiting Fellow Christopher B. Leinberger says that the Washington region could serve as the model for the direction the country’s other metro areas are heading over the next generation. The Associated Press already picked up on the…

D.C. Zombie Lurch ’07
The verdict on the D.C. Zombie Lurch on Saturday was sadly a little underwhelming … we estimate there were maybe only two dozen people participating in the mass “Thriller” dance, another two dozen who were dressed as zombies but didn’t dance, and then a slightly larger group of pure spectators and/or friends of zombies who didn’t dress up. Still, everyone was having a great time, and we got some fun shots of zombies with…

Elsewhere in the Ist-a-verse
This week, Phillyist saw the waters of a landmark fountain run red for a Showtime marketing stunt, the Phils pull ahead, and some serious nostalgia. They also got a chance to review an awesome tribute album, reminded folks to see the King, and appreciated their beautiful skyline. Chicagoist knows what it’s like to like the Cubs. But naming your kid Wrigley Fields? At least they can breathe a little easier now that Grossman’s out and…
Just a little over a month ago, DCist Jeff updated our very occasional series, What We’re Missing, with a plea for the introduction of municipal bicycles available for rent all over the city, a la the same deal that Paris, France is about to get. Here’s what he said: At first, we cringe at the thought of hundreds of street-clogging lost tourists and a cottage industry of bike thefts. With more examination, though, there’s a…

Elsewhere in the Ist-a-verse
LAist is experimenting with blogging dates from J-Date, but finds the best men are found offline. Some date vicariously online and that is one reason why porn is big — really freaking big — so they ask if they should cover XXX since the heart of it lays in the city’s San Fernando Valley. A writer grapples with her food porn photography obsession, another gets censored on Flickr, one gets scooped by the LA…

Elsewhere in the Ist-a-verse
This week we’d like to congratulate the -ist network’s Mother Hen, Gothamist’s Jen Chung, who found herself a recipient of Wired Magazine’s Wired Rave Award. If that doesn’t sound terribly exciting, keep in mind another recipient was J.K. Rowling. Yep, that’s right, the -ist network and Harry Potter now have something in common. Go us. Austinist has a chat with the ever-fashionable Golden Girl Rue McClanahan, and managed to catch some local fashionistas making…

21st Century L’Enfant
Whether we make the mental connections or not, everything about our city is interrelated: • The health of the Anacostia and Potomac watersheds is directly affected by runoff from roads; • Our roads are designed and routed to ease our daily commute to get to and from jobs created by regional economic growth policy; • Growth is dependent on a reliable and expanding base of skilled workers; • Workers attracted by lively mixes of shops,…

Missing: New Convention Center Retail
Former DCist Editor Rob Goodspeed had a terrific post up over at his own site last week which asks an important question: Where are all the retail outlets that were supposed to go in the Washington Convention Center? Three years after the opening of the new Washington Convention Center, only three businesses are open among the building’s 11 community retail spaces on 7th, 9th, and N Streets — Abou Master Goldsmith, Capitol Business Center, and…

Elsewhere in the Ist-a-verse
Torontoist immediately wins our heart by using the word “Jackass” in a headline. In fact, we love their use of it so much that we’re going to use it as much as possible throughout this post. For example, it looks like there are Toronto-area jackasses besides those who misuse the sidewalk: look at the crap on sale on Toronto’s craigslist. But it looks like Toronto doesn’t contain the kind of jackasses who pee in public…

Cropp Hits the Streets
She’s not set to announce her candidacy until tomorrow, but D.C. Council Chair Linda Cropp is already doing her best to increase her name recognition and create anticipation for her foray into the 2006 mayoral race. Starting Saturday, signs such as those pictured above began populating the trees, street signs, telephone poles, and public parks of the District. The signs — bearing no information spare the simple message “Think Cropp” or its Spanish equivalent…
