The change, some officials say, would undermine the independence of one of the city’s struggling agencies.

In a report, the city’s Department of Forensic Sciences defends it work and alleges that “fatal” conflicts of interest and inaccuracies on behalf of the U.S. Attorney for D.C.’s office caused the crime lab to lose its accreditation.

The city’s crime lab had its accreditation suspended over allegations of concealing information and fraudulent behavior, according to a national accreditation board.
