On April 16, 1862, the District freed 3,100 enslaved people, more than eight months before the Emancipation Proclamation.

A number of events are taking place throughout the city to mark the 150th anniversary of D.C. Emancipation Day, including a parade, fireworks show and mobile scavenger hunt.
