D.C. Public Library Wants To Build Bigger Neighborhood Branches In Communities Without Easy Access
Just the first phase of the system’s new Master Facilities Plan — building new libraries in Brightwood Park, Eckington/Edgewood, and Congress Heights to replace nearby smaller branches — would cost an estimated $60 to $70 million.
Library staff will implement a number of new safety measures such as limiting the number of people inside at one time, requiring face masks and enforcing social distancing.

D.C. Public Library Permanently Eliminates Late Fees
The library’s Board of Trustees unanimously voted to eliminate all overdue fines during its May board meeting.
Nine D.C. libraries have closed to the public for the remainder of the day due to high temperatures inside the buildings.
Last year D.C. Library-goers fought over a J.K. Rowling book, downloaded “Fifty Shades of Grey” and remained dedicated to the “Bossypants” audiobook.

MLK Library Marks 40th Anniversary This Week
This week the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Library celebrates its 40th anniversary, and library officials have a number of events planned to commemorate it.
Councilmember Jack Evans (D-Ward 2) wants to expand operating hours at D.C. public libraries, including opening them all on Sundays.
An Urban Land Institute panel that was charged with figuring out what do with the District’s aging Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Library released its final report yesterday, and it says much the same as what it hinted late last year—the city should consider shrinking the central library and adding new tenants to the iconic downtown building.
